Malta-based Aloaha Limited participated for the second consecutive year at the Omnicard trade fair in Berlin to present its smart card/e-ID middleware technology.
Omnicard is a major international conference for the smart card community. The trade show is the meeting place for highly qualified international speakers and e-security application specialists including smart card and software developers. This year’s main focus was on e-ID and e-health developments across Europe and the introduction of smart meters around the world.
During the trade show Aloaha consolidated its close partnerships with companies like Sagem Orga and HID-Global. Thanks to the continuous assistance of Malta Enterprise, the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund), and the International Competitiveness Grant Scheme, Aloaha has embarked on a market penetration strategy to further internationalise its security products.
George Gauci, the company’s Business Development Manager, said Aloaha has become an international software developer offering cryptographic solutions compatible to the latest algorithms and security cards.
He explained how the chip of a smart card is just one of the security functions of an e-ID or e-health system. For a fully operational e-ID or e-health project the functions of the chip have to be integrated transparently into the existing application infrastructure.
Aloaha’s middleware is required to provide legacy applications an interface to the smart card itself. Without such a software interface the e-ID/e-health system is not interoperable and thereby limits the whole system.
Aloaha also presented its logical access and hard disk encryption products and announced further developments for the popular Android platform.
The company is present at CeBIT 2011 in Hannover this week.

Omnicard is a major international conference for the smart card community. Its world-wide high reputation is grounded on the fact that the trade show is the meeting place for highly qualified international speakers and e-security application specialists including smart card and software producers.
The trade fair which takes place every January provides possibilities for around-the clock networking between public authorities, researchers, management representatives, smart card and software producers. This year’s main theme focussed on the new e-ID and e-health developments across Europe. Another major focus was the introduction of smart meters around the globe.

George Gauci, the company’s Business Development Manager explained how Aloaha has become one of the leading software producers offering other countries cryptographic solutions compatible to the latest algorithms and security cards.

CeBIT 2009 was again a hallmark for Malta based company Aloaha Limited which specialises in smart card technology, digital signatures and encryption processes. After this year’s success in participating in the world largest ICT trade fair, in Hannover, Germany, Aloaha’s markets have extended considerably and are now incorporating the communications industry.
Digital signatures and encryption processes are used to secure the integrity of PDF, XML and WinWord documents, mail correspondence and overall transmission of data. The market of electronic signatures and encryption is growing rapidly and is now covering voice, data and SMS, the company said.
At CeBIT 2009 Aloaha launched the mobile PKI SIM cards together with its PKI SIM encrypted connectivity and PKI SIM encrypted mobile Storage. The completely brand new product range for Windows Mobile devices includes mobile authentication and encryption features for voice, data and SMS. The Public Key Infrastructure is a set of hardware, software, people, policies, and procedures needed to create, manage, store, distribute, and revoke digital certificates.
Another highlight on CeBIT was the Aloaha Smartcard Connector which can close the gap between existing PKIs by using software certificates and hardware tokens. With the new PKCS #10 auto enrolment functionality, software certificates can be enrolled on any Aloaha supported hardware token. Hardware tokens can be smartcards, contactless Mifare Cards or supported mobile phones.
Aloaha thanked Malta Enterprise which coordinated the Enterprise Europe Network Brokerage Event for Maltese companies. The Enterprise Europe Network, a European project to which Malta Enterprise is member, assisted participants set bilateral meetings with potential partners during the event.

Aloaha Ltd, an international developer of document security and smart card software, will be exhibiting its full range of products at a prestigious trade fair of digital technology, CeBIT in Hannover, Germany, between March 4 and 9.
Last year CeBIT had an attendance of 500,000 visitors. Considered as the world’s biggest trade fair as well as the annual meeting place for the entire ICT industry, CeBIT’s theme for this year is ‘Improving life for the global village’.
With this in mind, leading-edge technology providers, research institutes and academia will all be meeting in one place to offer their exceptional expertise to all areas of society, including government agencies, industry and private individuals.
One important motivation in the ICT business is keeping track of new legal and policy developments.
A case in point is the EU’s deadline for 2010, when the European e-ID Management Framework comes into force. Also of great importance is the EU-wide launching of e-health cards.
In fact the Director of Aloaha Ltd has been collaborating steadily with the German health authorities in drafting the standards of electronic signatures for medical correspondence.
Under EU law, for an electronic signature to be legally binding, it is important that the signature provides authentication of the party who created it and ensures that what was signed cannot be altered.
Also important is that the party is able to keep an original of the data and of the electronic signature for his own records.
For an electronic signature to be issued it needs a driver, a smart card (which is considered the most secure device with respect to authentication purposes), a qualified certificate issued by a certificate service provider and finally interface software like the Aloaha Card Connector to finalise the signing of the document.
Aloaha supports various smart cards such as the German Health Insurance and Health Professional Card, the Belgium e-ID (Belpic), Swiss GS1, Italian Infocamere, Austrian Buergerkarte, SagemOrga Micardo, CardOS, Sicrypt, D-Trust, SignTrust and others.
Furthermore, the Aloaha PDF Signator is able to display and digitally sign any PDF document. The package also includes an ActiveX version to integrate the Aloaha technology into existing applications.
A full list of products exhibited on the fair can be seen at www.aloaha.com.
